Refurbished xxxx USN David White Mark II Sextant and Case. Navigational devices of this type were used to determine a ship?s position (latitude and longitude) by measuring the height of stars from the horizon. It was built by David White Company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This 6? index arm has the following inscription: "U.S. NAVY, BU NAV., MARK II" "N" (Circled) xxxx3 - xxxx" "David White Co. Milwaukee, Wis.". The (?5 < 145) graduated arc scale, micrometer drum, and vernier scale are all very readable. The sextant and accessories are housed in its original dovetail mahogany case, with brass and steel hardware, including a functioning brass mortise lock. The three tags attached to the front of the case and lid reveal some of this sextant's history. The original David White tag is aluminum due to a shortage of brass during WWII. The large rectangular brass tag, with the sextant serial number, was added by the U.S. Navy before the sextant was put into service. The added oval brass inventory tag indicates that this unit was issued to the "FIFTH NAVAL DISTRICT" based in Norfolk VA. The accessories consist of a 8½" scope, mirror adjusting tool, lock key, and spare horizon mirror. This unit appears to be complete except for the missing screwdrivers. There is no material damage that I can see, and the overall condition is quite nice considering the advanced age. This nautical artifact is the perfect example of U.S. maritime history.
