PELORUS - Nautical - Late 1800s - Gimbaled Brass & Lead - Wood Plank -- USA - Price: $300 in Cardiff, Alabama

Refurbished Pelorus which is commonly called a ?Dumb Compass?. Based on the design, materials used, and the excellent craftsmanship it was likely built in the USA in the late xxxxs. These navigational instruments are used to take bearings and are usually mounted in the wings of a ship?s bridge. It measures 9½? wide x 11? tall (add 9? when sight vanes are upright) and is currently mounted on a 12?x ¾" square wood plank. This particular unit is all brass and has a 8½? flat disc graduated at its edge in degrees and marked with lubber lines. The disk rotates and is fitted with sight vanes for taking bearings. All of this is  mounted on gimbals attached to a very heavy lead weight. The overall condition is excellent considering its advanced age. The only issues are that the mirror silvering is almost gone, the vane sighting wire has been replaced, the glass sun filter has been broken with the larger pieces glued together in place.
